Jim:

My apology for being late with my renewal. I have been rather ill for some time and somehow overlooked renewing until a cousin called with a question that made me realize how time has marched on. I have sent many of my correspondents your publication info and hope some of them have joined. You are absolutely the best!

Jim:

The Will of John Sutton of Lenoir Co, NC has recently come to light through a NC Supreme Court Case. Lenoir Co, formerly Dobbs, is a burned County. Wife Elizabeth; children - Martha Heath, Avy Allen, Mary Gray, Betsy Wood (dec) - her children were Dempsy, Jesse, Harriet Eliza Wood - Josiah, John, Benjamin, Jeremiah, and Hardy. The above John was born ca. 1779 and was suppose to have been the son of Benjamin Oxley Sutton and his wife Sarah Hardy.

Benjamin was suppose to have been born in Old Dobbs son of John Sutton bc 1718 in New Jersey son of William. No documentation has ever been given to support this John being from NJ and most of us are inclined to think he was from Bertie Co, NC, but have not been able to prove it.

In the Sutton book at the DAR under William, there is a John listed with his descendants; however, these have been marked through and inserted in the Lenoir Co information. No doubt this was done by someone from Lenoir Co. Can someone offer documentation that John, son of William (was he a son of George and Sarah Tilden), stayed in New Jersey? Thank you.
Martha Mewborn Marble 1377 Independence Ave, SE, Washington, DC 20003 [mmarble@erols.com]

Martha,

John Sutton, son of William Sutton, did indeed remain in New Jersey throughout his life. I have not found any records that list a Benjamin. There were a few Benjamin's found in related lines but I will need to do a little more research. I will pursue this and get back to with the results of my search.

I believe that it will be found that the Benjamin you mention is probably a child of one of George Sutton's children who migrated to N.C. from MA. It has yet to be proven that William Sutton of N.J. is a son of this same George Sutton.

Jim,

By the way, a cousin of mine, Kay Roberts from Rhinelander, WI, may have sent you an inquiry earlier. I believe a few of the details may have changed. I certainly would appreciate you including it again.

Crystal Sutton Foley, 3355-A Townsley Street, El Paso, TX 79904-4244, telephone: (915) 564-4012

SUTTON, Joseph

If anyone has any information regarding the following, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I will share/exchange any information that I have.

Goal: More about Joseph SUTTON; birth, marriage, parents, siblings. I believe he migrated from NY through IA through MO through TX though IL to WI during his lifetime.

Joseph Sutton; b. 1790-1799 (?NY); d. Feb-Oct 1846, Palestine, Anderson County, TX.

Wife: Angelina _____; b. 1811/12, KY; m1. ?; m2. 3 Oct 1846, Palestine, Anderson County, TX to George HANKS, Sr. Children:

1. John Sutton, b. 1832/3, IA.
2. James Sutton, b. 1836/7, IA, d. 1861/5, POW Libby (sp?) Prison, Civil War.
3. Mary J. Sutton, b. 1839/40, IA, d. after 1915, Boscobel, Grant County, WI, m1. Lucius J. WOOLLEY, m2. Noah WATKINS.
4. Thomas Sutton, b. 1840/1, Livingston County, MO, d. 1861/5, Civil War.
5. George Washington Sutton, b. 18 Feb 1842, MO, d. 25 Apr 1915, Stevens Point, Portage County, WI, m. 25 Dec 1870, Stevens Point, Portage County, WI to Clara Jane LAMERE.
6. Martha Sutton, b. 1846/6, TX, d. 1850/60.

Angelina may have been Joseph Sutton's 2nd wife.

I am descended from George Washington Sutton. From his obituary:

After their father (Joseph Sutton) died (and after the 1850 census), George and 3 brothers and 2 sisters were sent by their mother, Angelina, up a boat on the Mississippi to Peoria, IL where their grandmother (doesn't give her name or which one) lived. The grandmother had moved to Cassville, IL (This may be Cassville, WI instead). So they went on to Cassville. One sister, Martha, got ill and died during the trip.

All of the brothers served in the Civil War:

James died as a prisoner of war at Libby (sp?) prison.

Thomas killed by a Confederate sharpshooter.

John had returned south soon after his arrival in IL and was a soldier in the Confederate army. Never heard from again.

George was artificer (blacksmith) in 1st MO Engineers & 7th WI cavalry.

There are no death records for Joseph Sutton at Anderson Co., TX. Also no birth records there for Martha. Only the marriage index for Angelina's second marriage.

If you have any connections or any ideas of where else to look, I welcome your comments.

Hi Jim. I was glad to get your message. I thought that my message ended up in the twilight zone or something. Funny that you would mention a Howard Sutton. My great grandfather was Howard Lansing Sutton. He was born Jan., 22 1894 in Poland township, NY. His wife was Arlene Flossie Johnson, born Oct., 11, 1896 in Stockton, NY. They were married Oct. 16, 1916. They had 5 children: Evelyn (my grandmother), Marvin, Robert, Lawrence, and Elaine.

My great uncles Robert and Lawrence are both now deceased. My grandmother (Evelyn Sutton Basford) lives in Fresno, CA; Uncle Marvin lives in Florida, and Aunt Elaine (Sutton Palmer Tius) lives in Dunkirk, NY.

John William Sutton was the brother of Marvin Richard Sutton. And, Marvin Richard Sutton and Lillian May Barker were the parents of Howard Lansing Sutton. As a side note, the Suttons, the Johnsons and the Barkers are all interrelated through various marriages. I would have to look at my mom's Sutton information for that.

Hi!

I've enjoyed your Home Page on the Internet. I like the style of it. I also have a Sutton line. But am having problems verifying my Sutton family. They have different birth yrs & places for the different census records.

Joseph Sutton b. 1814/1816 in Ohio or Penn. (In 1880 lists both his parents born in N.Y.) His wife Mary Jane Alexander born 1821/1824 in Ohio or Penn. (Have also found her birthplace as Tenn. and Iowa). In 1880 she lists both her parents born England. Mary Jane Alexander could not read or write. This family is found in census records in 1850 Logan Co., Ohio; 1860 in Decatur Co., Iowa; 1870 & 1880 in Umatilla Co., Oreg. They had 9 children.

1. Mary Jane Sutton b. 23 Apr 1840 Muskingum Co., Ohio. Died 1925 Yakima, Yakima Co., Wash. Md. 22 June 1861 Decatur Co., Iowa to Jasper Weddle. Their daug. Eliza Jane Weddle b. 1868 Lane Co., Oreg, md. 1884 to James Henry Lasswell.
2. William Henry Sutton b. 1843 Ohio.
3. George W. Sutton b. 1844/45 Ohio.
4. Lewis Sutton b. 1848/50 Logan Co., Ohio.
5. Eliza E. Sutton b. 1851 Ohio. Md. about 1870 to Henry Reel - they were living in Umatilla Co., Oreg. in 1870.
6. Isabella Sutton b. 1854 Iowa (age 6 in 1860). Found as Rebecca E. Sutton (age 16 in 1870 - born Iowa).
7. Hannah Sutton b. 1856 Iowa.
8. Matilda Sutton b. 1859 Iowa. She married a Mr. Toney.
9. Theron Sutton b. 1862. He and his sister "Tilda" both lived in Joseph, Wallowa Co., Oreg. in 1925.

I have information on several other Sutton families that were also in Ohio, Iowa, and Oregon but don't know how any of them fit with each other.

Hi, from a Kansas Sutton!
My Great-Great Grandfather settled near here at Sutton Valley in Anderson Co. Kansas in about 1855. From him and his six brothers and one sister, I've built the family tree to 4000 and growing.

I started tracing my family about a year ago, and just recently got Internet access. In about two months I should have my currently gathered information computerized. I want to thank you for Sutton Searchers. It's been very interesting!

I'll be subscribing shortly, and will be interested in back issues? Thank You For This Homepage!

Jim:

Is anyone researching Sutton's from North and/or South Carolina?

I have a hint on a John Sutton b 1780-1784 maybe in North Carolina, Married Elizabeth J. Dill b about 1787 dau of Archibauld Dill in 1800-1805 time frame in Greenville, SC and died in Jackson Co. Alabama 1840-1850. They had at least 6 children, possibly 8, William, Stephen, John, Margaret Ann, Archibauld, Rowland Dill.

John's father was John Sutton, believed to be a Captain in the Rev War.

I believe them to be connected to my Joseph Edward Sutton b about 1894 in Jackson Co., Alabama, son of Foster Sutton b about 1855, maybe Alabama, son of Carroll Sutton. Joseph Edward married Molly Roseanne Gass and lived in Franklin and Marion Counties, TN.

Any information on any of these Sutton's would be much appreciated.

Hi Sutton Searchers:

I need some help here. I am having a very difficult time in tracing this side of my family. Here is what I have so far:

Hiram Bristol b. abt 1810 NY m. 10 Oct 1854 Margaret Sutton at Marion Twsp., Livingston, MI Son: Hiram, Jr. b. 1855. Possible parents of Margaret per 1850 MI Census:

Livingston Co, Tyrone Twsp. - Zachariah Sutton b. 1812 NY
Martha b. 1810 NY
Ch: Margaret-14 yrs, David-13, Nancy-8, Rachael-6, Mary-3, Henry-7 mos. (all b. MI). Also in household-Affa Taylor, age 54 b. NY - Idiotic

or

Genesee Co., Ganes Twsp. - William Sutton b. 1806 NY
Emily b 1807 NY
Ch: William-19, Margaret-17, Mary-12, Jacob-9, Phillinda-7, Ellen-5, Susan-2 (1st 5 b. NY, rest MI)

Hiram, Sr. was also married to Margaret Lewis 7 Feb 1847 and Cynthia Hulse 2 Apr 1874 with children from each of these marriages and once before he married Margaret Lewis with 5 children from this earlier unknown wife.

According to the 1830 Livingston Co., MI Census, there are two Hiram Bristol's with wives and children, and I am assuming one is the above Hiram, Sr. and one is his father also b. NY.

The 1850 Livingston Co., MI census shows Hiram, wife Margaret (Lewis) and 6 children. Then the 1870 Census shows Hiram with no wife, 3 of the younger children and a Julia A. Baker - 64 yrs. b. NY - housekeeper (I have no idea how she fits into the picture). So, Margaret Sutton is gone by 1870.

Also, in 1850, living next door to Hiram & Margaret (Lewis) in Hartland Twsp, Livingston Co., is Lewis Sutton, age 25, b. NY, wife-Angeline-26, b. NY and children-Lucinda-7, Adelia-5, Jeremiah-3, and Adelburt-6 mos.

To confuse matters further, I found on the 1900 Clare Co., MI census a Margaret Bristol living in Redding Twsp., age 64, running a boarding house.

As you can see, I have many pieces that don't fit together. If anyone can help me, I would be thrilled to no end.

Hello Sutton Searchers!

I wonder if you have run across anything on the family of Richard SUTTON, originally of New Jersey, then migrated to Fleming County, Ky. He appears on Fleming county tax lists as early as 1793. Wife's name is unknown, but children include Rachael b 28 Sept 1780, Agnes "Nancy", Amos, George, Jane, Jonathon and William. Richard remarried on July 7, 1826 in Fleming Co to Milly Adams. What is known of Richard's family in New Jersey? Who was his first wife? What are the birthdates and places for their children?

Any help will be appreciated. I can share some info on their daughter Rachael SUTTON.

Dear SUTTON SEARCHERS:

I would appreciate any help regarding the following couple who were married in England: Daniel COOKSEY and

Penelope SUTTON at St Leonards Parish Church, Shoreditch, England. The date was 19th January 1775. One of the witnesses was another Daniel COOKSEY who I am guessing could be the father or possibly an uncle of the groom.

Of this marriage I have found trace of two children, first Sarah, born 16th March 1777, St Michael's Parish Church, Gloucester. The second George, born 25th December 1792, St Aldate parish Church, Gloucester. As you can see there is a long gap between the two children so it is possible that there were several in between.

The name Daniel COOKSEY has run for five generations as the eldest son of each generation until my eldest uncle to my knowledge. The first of these would have been born somewhere in the late 1750s, as the second was born about 1800. I have a strong feeling that the groom in this marriage could be the father of my first Daniel. And of course if that is the case the witness could possibly be the next generation back. Purely guesswork at this stage.

Would you have any record of this marriage and possibly any clues to other children to the marriage. I have been unable to pick up Penelope in the IGI except for marriage. I am hoping there is a Sutton out there with some clues that might help in my search.

Dear Jim:

I have a fairly reliable listing of progenitors back to Robert Sutton, Seventh Baron of Dudley, Kent Co., England; born abt 1585. I had help from Rebecca Greene, Eatontown, NJ and Helen Wiebe, Westbank, BC, Canada as well as confirmation and help from SUTTON SEARCHERS, thanks to you and your publication.

Recently I received correspondence from The Principality of Hutt River Province in Queensland Australia. I sent them my $5 and am now addressed as Honorable Dr. Dallas Sutton and new correspondence in which I am to send them another $40 for a Royal Patronage Certificate and a Royal Ceremonial Jewel. This sounds like a pretty rank racket to me. What is your opinion?
Dallas A. Sutton, PO Box 86, Chico, CA 95927

Dearest Honorable Doctor:

For the small and inconsequential sum of $100 I will send you a Certificate and Ceremonial jewel worthy of the high and mighty station in life that you've attained. The certificate will be black & white only as my HP Laserjet doesn't do color [or windows]. I'll ask Matthew to spot a really pretty piece of pink granite from the backyard to serve as your jewel.

Sounds to me like they think they have a fish on the line! These scams are as old as genealogy probably or at least as old as man's desire to acquire fame and titles. Jim
PS The offer mentioned above is void where prohibited by common sense or anything else.

Dear Jim,

I received a note from Nicholas Sutton ref my Kilkenny ancestry. I now have received info that my g.father Michael was

born 06/19/1861 Parish Slieverue, Townland Drumdowny and that his parents were Patrick Sutton & Alice Roach.

Patrick Sutton married Alice Roach/Roche on 25 Mar 1851 in Glenmore Parish RC in the Townland of Scartnamoe [sic], Kilkenny, Ireland. Witnesses: William Cooke & Anastatia Roche by a Rev. J. Walsh. Their Children were:

1. John Sutton, b. 09/13/1852 Slieverue parish RC, Townland Drumdowney Hill. Sponsors: Edmund Haligan & Anastatis Roche.
2. John Sutton, b. 01/11/1854, sponsors: William Cooke, Margaret Roach
3. James Sutton, b. 12/12/1856, sponsors James Cudihy & Mary Heffernan
4. Patrick Sutton, b. 01/20/1859, sponsors: James Walsh & Catherine Dunphy
5. Michael Sutton, b. 06/91/1861, sponsors: Patrick Roach & Ellen Grant
6. Mary Sutton, b. 05/03/1862, sponsors: Michale Burke & Mary Cooke
7. John Sutton, b. 09/08/1865, sponsors: Martin Roach & Mary Burke

All these children were born in Slieverue parish RC, Townland Drumdowney Hill, Kilkenny, Ireland.

This info came thru the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, Rothehouse, Parliament St., Kilkenny. My cousin had written to them. They now want L150.00 for a complete family history.(This would be about $250. American) Is this a proper fee?

M g.father Michael left Ireland after an incident with British Soldiers and landed in Newfoundland. He m. Anne Kelly, b. 06/08/1872 S.E. Placentia. They had eleven children on Pilleys Isle., Newfoundland. Michael died 12 June 1917 and g.mother Anne left for USA. She lived and died in Woodside Queens on 17 Mar 1945.

Please let Nicholas Sutton know of this new info as he kindly offered to look up info when he was going to Kilkenny in April or May.
Kay Giblin(Sutton), 120 Bayview Av, Babylon, NY 11702-4322

That's a difficult one to answer Kay. I know I'd probably pay $250 for a complete family history, but I doubt I'd ever get one that way! I think you'd be well advised to ask for specific information on what records will be searched, how many hours/weeks/months would be devoted to developing your complete history and what specifically the final output you'll receive will consist of. Then, you should be able to judge the value you'll receive for your money. - Jim

Jim:

I found your name on the Eastern Townships webpage. I believe we are related since your address was given for both the Sutton and the Johnson surnames. I am descended from Mary Harriet Sutton (1837) who married Thomas Johnson (1828) on 19 Sept 1854. Mary was the daughter of Robert Sutton and Sarah Buckland.

Thomas was the son of John Johnson and Betsey Chamberlain. I have traced the Johnsons back to Westmorland England. Thomas Johnson's grandfather married a Jaques and I have managed to trace this line back considerably. I have drawn a blank on the Sutton side earlier than Robert (circa 1803), but his wife Sarah Buckland can be traced to the New England Bucklands.
