Cordelia Frances SUTTON Buckner
I need the death date and place for Cordelia Frances SUTTON wife of Benjamin Pendleton BUCKNER. Cordelia was born abt 1800 in Scott County, KY. She has one child proved named Mary Ellen BUCKNER who was the 2nd wife of James FERGUSON. Husband Benjamin Pendleton BUCKNER, immigrated to TEXAS around 1835/36 and proceeded to have 2 more children; Benjamin BUCKNER dates and places unknown; and Cordelia Hanna BUCKNER b.28 Feb 1843 Houston, Harris, TX/D. 23 Jun 1934 Waco, TX who married Joseph Robert Morris. Both Mr. Morris and Benjamin Pendleton Buckner served as mayor of the city of Houston, and were instrumental in its planning and development.

I have not had any luck with discovering if Cordelia Frances Sutton was indeed the mother of the last 2 children. Mary Ellen BUCKNER Ferguson never traveled to Texas but moved from KY to MO with her husband, stepchild and children. She died in Columbia, Boone, MO 12 Sept 1870. She lived with her grandmother in KY until her marriage.

Parents of Cordelia Frances SUTTON were William SUTTON and "Sallie" Sarah Pendleton BUCKNER. Cordelia and her husband Benjamin were 1st cousins.

Solomon Dill Sutton

We have a picture of a tall, well built, blonde handsome Solomon Dill Sutton who came from Suffick, Eng as a stow a way on a ship in New England.

His father was William Dill Sutton and in the mercantile business back there in England. Solomon had a twin sister. Solomon walked out of the cold states into the frontier of Tenn. He was near starved when he ran into a group of men who offered him food. The four of them were later captured by Indians and remained on a Cherokee plantation for several years. Solomon escaped but then returned and stayed and worked and married the chief's daughter -Martha or Sally or Solly Firebush/Forbes/Forbush. They ran a large plantation with slaves until civil war time and later left with the Indians during the time of the Trail of Tears. Were in TX a while then in Oklahoma.

Solomon Sutton born about 1825 had 4 or 5 children

1. John Sutton
2. William Sutton
3. America Love Sutton
4. Fountain Duke Sutton b. about 1855 mar Mattie Ida Ellison (daughter of Martin M.Ellison and Mary Etta Williams) they had nine children
5. Lafayet Sutton

Fountain Duke Sutton and Matti Ida Ellison had 9 children:

A.) Etta May Sutton b. 1880
B.) Alfred Howell Sutton
C.) America Love Sutton
D.) Fountain Duke Sutton
E.) Wiley Eugene Sutton
F.) Jessie Roscoe Sutton
G.) Oklahoma (Homer) Sutton
H.) Zacheriah Lender Sutton
I.) infant

If you have information about the Suttons in Suffuck England I'd like to hear about the family in general. I have heard the Suttons there were very wealthy family. One relative told me something the other day about Solomon and two brothers leaving under threat of death because of money owed to their father by people in power. It did sees strange that Solomon would have come by himself and just walked into the wilderness.

Some of the granddaughters of this couple were so attractive they went into the silent movies in Calif.

William Sutton/ Carey Sutton
Jonathan K. Polk Sutton

I'm interested in this William Sutton, should you happen to run across him in any research:

Although apparently not of my line, I would like to know more of the ancestry of William SUTTON. I would also like to know if and how he might be connected to Carey SUTTON and especially Jonathan K. Polk SUTTON mentioned at the end of this note. The 1850 Bradley Co., TN census, p141, dwelling 45, family 45, lists William SUTTON (born GA), age 51; wife, Lavinia (Laurena in 1850 AR) and six of their children, ages 3 to 18. Family 46 is James S. Sutton, age 26 (a probable son) and his wife, Jane.

Page 139, dwelling 18, family 18, lists Benny C. TIPTON (born TN), age 20+ with wife Lucinda and a female child, Ailreyre (very poor copy and writing difficult to read) aged 5. Also is a 50+ year old male named John (surname unreadable) and a 6-mo. old male child, William A. whose surname is the same as John's but equally unreadable by me. Family 23 on this same page is Benny SUTTON (born TN), age 26 (another son of William?) and his wife, Sarah, 22 and child Losana (Louisiana?), age 1. In 1860, Hempstead Co., AR, page 721, dwelling 238, family 238 is James SUTTON (born NC), age 59 and his family. Same page, dwelling 244 is William of Bradley Co., TN with his family. Included with the family is Lucinda HICKS and three TIPTON children.

It appears then, that Mr. TIPTON has disappeared because Lucinda married Autsin HICKS in Hempstead Co. on July 17, 1857 at the residence of William SUTTON. Mr. HICKS subsequently disappeared - probably as a result of the unpleasantness of the time - and Lucinda became the second wife of my 3G-grandfather, Lilburn C. COFFEE in May, 1861. There were no children born to this marriage.

Also in Hempstead Co. during this period is Mr. Carey SUTTON and Mr. Jonathan K. Polk SUTTON. Carey was a Justice of the Peace in that county and performed numerous marriages. Jonathan was an oft married gentleman, having walked the aisle with (at least) four different ladies. I have not found any record where Carey officiated at any of Jonathan's weddings, however. The first recorded marriage I find for him is to Mary Elizabeth SISCO on 17 May 1868. They had one child, Henry J., b c1869.

His second marriage was to Susan BEARDEN on 8 Nov. 1874. I do not know of any children born to this marriage. The third marriage was to Duchsey J. GULLIAMS on 18 Mar 1888 and again, I know of no children born to this union. His fourth and final marriage was to a grand-daughter of the above Lilburn COFFEE, Sarah Ellen COFFEE. They were married 13 Apr 1890 and three children were born to the marriage: Mamie, b. Dec. 1890; Lillian Ann, b 6 Jun 1894 and Violet, b 21 Sep 1898. After Jonathan died, Sarah Ellen and her daughters ended up in southern CA during the early part of the 1900's. I have additional information on their descendants.
